Much like an oil stain on fresh concrete is difficult to remove, the outer layer of tooth enamel is very porous and deep stains are not easy to eliminate without a whitening agent. The most widely used teeth whitening reagent available on the market today is carbamide peroxide.

Carbamide peroxide is a compound that causes a chemical reaction with tooth enamel and has an esthetic, whitening effect. The molecular formula of carbamide peroxide is CH4N2O.H2O2 or CH6N2O3. It is also known by chemists as urea peroxide and exists in a solid crystalline form.

For teeth whitening uses it is most commonly packaged in a viscous (sticky) gel form that is meant to adhere to the tooth enamel (and kept in close contact by teeth whitening trays).

When combined with water (saliva), it breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea. The overall effect is oxidation and it essentially breaks up the deep stains the outer layer of tooth enamel.

Carbamide peroxide whitening gel is available in several strengths that range from 10% to 35%. Although the ADA has not officially condoned the use of any strength greater than 12% for home use, many online retailers offer carbamide peroxide at greater strengths.

As with all whitening products, one must use caution and always ask the advice of a dentist before beginning a professional teeth whitening program with carbamide peroxide and teeth whitening trays or with any other whitening product.
