There are many different kinds of Teeth Whitening Gel available from your dentist or online. Opalescence, Nite White, Zoom and Forte are all examples of professional gels available from the dentist. Quality gels can also be purchased online. It important to know what the differences are between various teeth whitening gels.

Teeth whitening gel is made from a peroxide- carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These 2 peroxides oxidate the teeth and lift stains.

Even though there is only one primary ingredient in all whitening gel, there are quite a few differences between them. The first difference is strength.

Whitening gels are made up of different percentages ranging from 10% to 35% in strength. Gels with the higher percentage whiten faster than those with a lower percentage.

Next, although whitening gels contain the same primary ingredient, products differ in consistency. Usually higher quality gels are thicker in consistency which helps the gel stick to the teeth while whitening. Another difference between gels are taste. Most gel is mint flavor, but some come in bubble gum, cherry and melon.

Finally, there are two ingredients that a few gels contain. Calcium peroxide or calcium phosphate are sometimes added to whitening gel to strengthen or calcify the teeth and reduce sensitivity while whitening.

It is important to consult with your dentist before using whitening gel. Stronger gels should always be used with professional whitening trays in order to reduce sensitivity and damage or irritation to the gums. Use caution when purchasing gel online.

Some gels contain harmful amines. Only wear gel for the recommended amount of time and report any problems to the dentist.

Gel can be stored from 6-12 months at room temperature or up to 2 years if refrigerated. Do not freeze the gel.
